Devlog #3 Open Beta Begins!


Hey yall.

It's been quite a while since the last update, and I have been quite busy for the past few months. So, I have not updated my game much at all since the last video devlog. So, since I'm considering getting back into making this game since I missed the launch date, I am releasing the current beta for all of you people to try out. It may be quite buggy since it has not been tested much except for a few people who I gave the key to. So other than a few patches, the game has been relatively unchanged since last beta build.

MAJOR UPDATES

Not really anything has been added since the third devlog video, but this has been released and I plan to resume development soon. Most updates from here on out would be bug fixes etc until the game polished enough for me to consider it finished. We could see new content added if I'm feeling up to it, like hub, minigames, tutorial, etc.

Two new zones:

There is now two new areas for you to run around and explore, "Subzero Sector" and "Vegastoria" respectively. These two new zones are the most challenging ones yet, and like with the jungle stage, have unique level gimmicks that give them an identity.

Subzero Sector is the snow stage, featuring lots of fast paced grinding and crushing platforms to watch out for. It also has a unique bullet enemy that tracks you and shoots lasers for you to reflect back at them.

Vegastoria is the final stage of the game, and is the longest out of any of the stages. It is supposed to be intense, with tons of enemies and platforming to get ready for. It will be tough to get to this point of the game for most people, but if you make it, don't expect this area to be any easier than other stages. It has pink spiked robots which roll into you and drain your rings when in contact with you.

All the bosses are finished:

Previously, only Tropical Track had a boss stage. Now all stages have a boss fight afterwards, which alternate between Eggman, and my amazing quality original character. It takes place in advance 2 format as usual, where you run as sonic as if it were an infinite runner. Eggman's got some shiny new gadgets to show off, and you may see Nytron again in your journeys.

Optimization:

In the old alpha version of the game, I was using quite an outdated version of GameMaker to create it. Since then, I have ported the game to GameMaker Studio 2 for more advanced features it includes. The engine is far more optimized too, and the game runs far faster now in this new version. I made it, (with an inbuilt feature of the engine) that the game would only draw objects which were onscreen, where previously everything was drawn at once. This especially impacted larger stages in the game.

Cutscenes:

The game now includes cutscenes which are meant to give you a sense of a story occurring in the game. I made a story so that all of the areas that you went to would make sense and connect to each other plot-wise. Later on I'm planning on releasing some movie made out of the cutscenes from the game so far.
